BombaYo at La Casa de la Herencia Cultural Puertorriqueña
Tuesdays, 6:30 – 8:30 P.M. / Free Admission
BombaYo is a youth project dedicated to preserving the rich Afro Puerto Rican tradition of Bomba. Under the musical direction of co-founder Jose L. Ortíz (also known as Dr. Drum) and Melinda González, this group of teens, brings youthful energy to a centuries old Afro Puerto Rican music and dance tradition. Mr. Ortíz’ engaging style encourages children and families to explore their own son musicality. He sees this art form as a vehicle for self-discipline and motivation, cultural affirmation and educational excellence. Bomba is more of an experience than a show, it’s where singing, dancing and drumming come together in a community celebration of life.
BombaYo emerged from the streets and schoolyards of the Bronx. This talented and exciting youth group has performed at schools, youth conferences, Latino Heritage Month events across NYC, the National Women’s Heart Day at Madison Square Garden’s Expo Center and for an off-Broadway show. The group has shared their musical talents at sweet sixteens, funerals and other social gatherings.
Jose Ortiz (Dr. Drum), is a Bronx native and percussionist of Afro-Caribbean rhythms. For the past 9 years, he has been involved with after-school programs throughout NYC and has developed original curricula to teach percussion to young people. He has been a percussionist for Segunda Quimamba, Alma Moyo, Los Bomberos de Brooklyn, and has co-chaired a committee for the Bomba Research Conference.
